The Physicians

The physicians at Southeastern Spine Center are committed to staying on the leading-edge of new technological techniques and advancements in spine care. We offer two fellowship trained spine surgeons who work simultaneously in surgery to minimize operating room time while maximizing efficiency and patient care which results in a faster, smoother recovery. As part of that commitment, they serve as training instructors to surgeons across the United States, participate in clinical research, and participate in design and development of surgical instrumentation.

Southeastern Spine is comprised of a diverse group of nationally recognized, board certified & board eligible physicians devoted to providing personalized and focused patient care. This multispecialty team offers patients a variety of comprehensive and holistic approaches to their care.

Thomas Sweeney II, MD, PhD

Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery / Fellowship Trained Spine Specialist

Dr. Sweeney was born and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Massachusetts with a B.S. in Wildlife Biology in 1980. He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1989, along with a Ph.D. in Anatomy. He subsequently completed a research fellowship at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia in 1996. This was followed by a one year fellowship at The Spine Center at the University of Virginia in the operative and non-operative treatment of Spinal Disorders.

He has been published extensively, including new methods on bone healing, and is recognized as a national speaker on disorders and surgical procedures of the spine.

Tan Duy Ly, DO

Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery / Fellowship Trained Spine Specialist

Tan Duy Ly graduated medical school from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and is a Fellowship trained Spine Specialist. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Garden City Hospital of the Michigan University Statewide Campus System. He completed a spine fellowship at the Spine Institute of Arizona in Scottsdale, Arizona.

He specializes in the operative and non-operative treatment of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine with an emphasis in microsurgery and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Outside of patient care, Dr. Ly has a special interest in aviation, mountain biking, and hiking.

David Karp , MD, MBA

Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery / Fellowship Trained Spine Specialist

David Karp was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Albany Medical College in Albany New York in 1977. He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Albany Medial Center Hospital in 1982.

He is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery. He obtained an M.B.A. from the University of South Florida in 1997. In 2002, Dr. Karp completed his Spine Fellowship at the American Institute of Spinal Surgery in Sacramento California.
